From the Courtroom to the Vineyard: Theodora Lee’s Bold Wine Journey
Theodora Lee, founder of Theopolis Vineyards
Some journeys are rooted in the land long before the first vine is planted.
For Theodora Lee, founder of Theopolis Vineyards, winemaking became the natural intersection of passion, purpose, and possibility. What began as a successful career in law ultimately evolved into a bold reimagining of what the wine industry could look like - more inclusive, more expressive, and deeply connected to community.
Transitioning From Law to Viticulture
Theodora’s path to winemaking was anything but traditional. At its core, her story is about more than grapes or bottles. It’s about redefining tradition, honoring community, and proving that when passion meets purpose, the results can be extraordinary. Raised in a small Texas town from a family that valued education and hard work, she developed an early appreciation for food, culture, and togetherness. That foundation carried her to the University of California, Berkeley, and later to UC Hastings College of Law, where she built a sharp legal mind and a successful corporate law career.
Yet even as she thrived professionally, a quieter calling remained - one rooted in creativity, land, and legacy. Answering that call meant stepping into unfamiliar territory. Trading courtrooms for vineyards, Theodora immersed herself in viticulture, studying the craft, traveling to wine regions, and learning from the ground up. The result was Theopolis Vineyards, founded in 2003, a place where excellence in winemaking exists alongside storytelling, heritage, and intention. Theopolis Vineyards sits in California’s rugged and beautiful Yorkville Highlands, where the land speaks clearly through the glass. Known for its expressive Pinot Noir and Petite Sirah, the winery is defined by a commitment to sustainable farming and a deep respect for terroir. Each bottle reflects both the character of the region and the intentional care behind its creation—wines that are as thoughtful as they are powerful.
Expanding Representation in the Wine Industry
As one of the few African American women to own a vineyard in the United States, Theodora is a trailblazer in an industry that has long lacked diverse representation. But her impact goes beyond titles or firsts. At Theopolis, diversity isn’t a buzzword, it’s a guiding principle. She believes wine should reflect the richness of the people who enjoy it, and she actively advocates for broader representation and access throughout the industry. That philosophy has not gone unnoticed. Theopolis has earned numerous accolades for the quality of its wines, along with recognition for its leadership and vision. Media outlets and wine publications have highlighted Lee’s journey, celebrating not only her wines but the values that shape them. Her story resonates because it proves that excellence and inclusivity are not separate goals but intricately entwined. Beyond the vineyard, Theopolis is a living part of its community. Through education, partnerships, and shared experiences, Theodora has created a brand that invites people in rather than shutting them out. By supporting local businesses and fostering meaningful connections, she demonstrates how thoughtful winemaking can also be a catalyst for economic and cultural growth.
What’s Next: Looking Ahead
Looking ahead, Theodora continues to push forward with intention. Her vision includes expanding Theopolis Vineyards while continuing to champion diversity, mentorship, and innovation in winemaking. She imagines a future where representation is the norm, not the exception—and where everyone can see themselves reflected in the world of wine.
With every vintage, Theopolis Vineyards reminds us that wine is not just something we drink, it’s something we share, something we learn from, and something that brings us together.
